Understanding Tanzania
A quick map of the country so the park names stop being a blur.
Tanzania's safari country falls into two main circuits, and knowing which one you're in makes every other decision easier.
The Northern Circuit — Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire, Lake Manyara — is the classic, most-visited route. Parks sit close together, roads are good, and it's where the Great Migration happens. Most first-time visitors go here.
The Southern Circuit — Nyerere (Selous), Ruaha — is wilder, less crowded, and usually reached by small plane rather than road. A strong choice for a second safari or travelers who want fewer other vehicles at sightings.
Zanzibar, a short flight from either circuit, is the common add-on for a few beach days after the safari.
