The Great Migration, Explained Simply
Where the herds are each month, and what that means for where you should stay.
← All lessons
The Migration is a loop, not an event with one start date — so "when is it happening" is really "where is it right now."
- January–March: Calving season in the southern Serengeti plains — huge herds, lots of newborns, and the predators that follow them.
- April–June: The herds move north and west through the central and western Serengeti.
- July–October: Dramatic river crossings into the Maasai Mara region — the most famous (and most photographed) phase.
- November–December: The herds head back south to start again.
The practical takeaway: which lodge or camp you book should follow the herd's location for your travel month, not just "the Serengeti" in general — the ecosystem is enormous.
